PORTLAND– In the decade since 9/11, the FBI has constructed one of the
largest domestic spy networks in the nation’s history, with thousands of
registered and unregistered informants operating inside U.S. Muslim and
activists communities. This secretive spy network has become an essential
part of the government’s domestic counterterrorism efforts. Using
informants in these communities helps the government preempt the next
terrorist attack, FBI officials say.
But critics of the FBI’s domestic spy operations say it is
counterproductive, sowing distrust within these communities and entrapping
the most vulnerable members in elaborate stings involving agent
provocateurs.
The controversial high-profile domestic terrorism case of two boyhood
friends from Midland, Texas, and their relationship with a government
informant is examined in the new documentary film BETTER THIS WORLD, from
director/producers Katie Galloway and Kelly Duane de la Vega, when it has
its Portland premiere at the Clinton St. Theater. The premiere comes just
after Congress passed an extension of the Patriot Act on May 26.
Set against the backdrop of the 2008 Republican National Convention amid
bomb plots, arrests and a subsequent federal terrorism trial, this
suspense-filled portrait of two young men caught in the web of the
powerful post-9/11 domestic security apparatus poignantly describes not
only the problems of power and authority, but also the ultimate power of
friendship, forgiveness and love.
BETTER THIS WORLD had its world premiere as SXSW Film Festival in March
and has since won the Best Documentary Feature prizes at both the San
Francisco International Film Festival and the Sarasota International Film
Festival. It will have a national broadcast on September 6, just days from
the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

intending to firebomb the 2008 Republican National Convention, is a tale
of idealism, loyalty, crime and betrayal. BETTER THIS WORLD follows the
radicalization of these boyhood friends from Midland, Texas, under a
revolutionary activist. The results: eight homemade bombs, multiple
domestic terrorism charges and an entrapment defense hinging on a
controversial FBI informant. The film goes to the heart of the war on
terror and political dissent in post-9/11 America. A co-production of ITVS.
